The photo above makes me feel a little sad. It's from Joan's
neophyte days in Hollywood when she was approximately 19 years old and "reveals," no pun intended, how she was exploited,
as were so many girls (and still are, no doubt). According to Lawrence
Quirk, Joan was one of the girls MGM "provided" as dates to visiting
execs, although allegedly what that entailed was up to them. Quirk knew because his uncle was one of these execs.
Joan told him that unlike a lot of the other men, his uncle had treated her with kindness.
